Designing for quiet

A few principles for interfaces that feel calm instead of loud.

A lot of the web competes for attention. Calm products do the opposite.

Principles

  1. Use contrast with intention.
  2. Remove decoration that doesn't support meaning.
  3. Let spacing do part of the work.
  4. Keep navigation obvious and short.

When a page is easy to scan, readers stay longer and think more clearly.
